Tattoos can be a great way of expressing yourself by adding artwork to your body. However, not every tattoo is considered a work of art or loved by the owner. This is where tattoo removal might come in. If you have some ink that you are not totally in love with, you might be considering having it removed, but before you do, it’s important that you are well informed on the procedure. How Tattoo Removal Works

The laser uses your body to do half of the work by simply breaking the ink particles up so they are small enough for the body’s immune system to effectively attack them, removing them from the body.

You are likely to have short sessions, around 10-30 minutes each. You will then need to return for anywhere between 6-20 sessions every 8-10 weeks depending on the size, age, and colour of your tattoo. Large, colourful tattoos that have been completed recently are likely to take considerably longer to remove than small, old tattoos that use only black ink may be removed much faster.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?

The short answer is yes. Laser tattoo removal, like most cosmetic procedures, can have some side effects, but most people only experience very mild symptoms after undergoing the procedure. These side effects may include:

  • Blistering
  • Scabbing
  • Swelling
  • Scarring
  • Itching
  • Discomfort

While that may sound like a scary list, most of these are usually just part of the healing process and rarely last longer than a week or two. If your symptoms persist, it’s a good idea to see a doctor.

What About Aftercare?

You can help to speed up the healing process by looking after the area of your skin that has been treated. There are plenty of things you can do to help ease any discomfort you may have as well as keeping your skin healthy. The NHS advises,

“The skin may be red with a raised rash for a short while afterwards. Holding an ice pack to the skin may help (try a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel). Your skin would also be more sensitive to the sun, so you’d need to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least a week afterwards, and use sunscreen.”

This aftercare treatment is particularly important as it will help you to get the best results, ensuring that your skin is healthy when you go back in for your next session.
